Taj Mahal

Arguably the most famous building in the world, the Taj Mahal is a magnificent monument that took 21 years and thousands of skilled workmen to build, and that is taken by millions around the world as a monument to romantic love.

Located in the heart of Agra, capital of India during the Moghul era, hundreds of years ago, the Taj, as it’s also know, was built by the Moghul emperor Shah Jahan, in memory of his late , beloved and favourite wife, Mumtaz Mahal.

Heart broken by her death, the emperor planned the Taj as his late wife’s tomb where she would be enshrined. Work on the Taj began in 1632, with a workforce estimated at 20000 men drawn from across present day Asia, and the mausoleum was finally completed in 1653.

Ironically, though Shah Jahan was alive to see the Taj completed, this period saw his mental and physical decline, especially after his overthrow by his own son, Aurangzeb, resulting in the former emperor’s confinement in the Agra fort, from where it is, perhaps rather poetically stated, that spent his last years wisfully gazing at the monument dedicated to his wife.

The Taj is reknowned for it’s perfection, both structurally and aesthetically . The design is said to be based on the Islamic concept of the Garden of Paradise. All materials used in its construction were the very best available at the time, with marble from Rajashtan and precious stones [used in the inlays] being brought in from as far away as Persia and China.

Parts of the main building are inscribed with Islamic verses perfectly proportioned as well as a variety of carved floral inlays.

The marble in Taj Mahal radiates different shades from white to light pink depending on the time of the day-shoor
