Rajasthan's recent history traces its roots back to only 600 AD, when warrior communities such as the Rajputs ruled various parts of the region through their kingdoms, which combined formed the larger Rajputana territory. Despite the emegence of Mughal rule in most of India, Rajputana elluded the Mughals as the rajputs successfully resisted for hundreds of years.
In the late 1600's, the Rajputs came under increasing attack from the Marathas and had to finally turn to the British for help, resulting in the a mutual collaboration between these two powers, which lasted right upto independence from British rule in the form of formal recognition of the Rajouts royal status.

The Pink City - Jaipur |
The capital of Rajastan, Jaipur gets it's Pink city tag from the older part of the city in the North west, which has a pink appearance due to a wash applied to buildings, first done in 1856 in preparation of a visit by Prince Albert from England.
Jaipur's most famous sights are the monuments of Hawa Mahal, bulit 1799, the Jantar Mantar observatory, both in the heart of the Pink city and the City Palace, home to the royal family that last ruled the state. Jaipur is also a superb place for clothes and jewellery shopping.

Jaisalmer |
Almost a frontier desert town, Jaisalmer, located in the remote west of Rajastan, in the Thar desert region, has a special, intrepid charm to it, one which you might expect from a beautiful desert town rising from the barren landscape. With a history going back to 1156 when a local ruling clan founded the town, there is plenty to see in Jaisalmer including the large Jaisalmer fort. |

| Jaipur is the capital of Rajastan and its Sanganer airport is served by several flights daily from Delhi and Mumbai. There is also a regular train service from Delhi and the luxurious Palace on Wheels stops here as well. |
