Most significant historic sites within North India are located closer to Delhi as this area was more active during Mughal rule and has various monuments such as the Red Fort and Kutub Minar. Most of north India was the staging ground of succesive invasions of the established rulers in ancient India, as even the Mughals themselves first invaded from the far north east, partly present day Afghanistan.
Therefore there are various sites of some significance related to this period of Indian history littered across the northern states.

Scenery and spectacular Landscapes |
Some of the best scenery in India is to be found in Himachal Pradesh and Jammu & Kashmir states, including Kashmir proper and the Ladakh region. The barren landscapes in Ladakh have infact been likened to a moonscape, and travel here is a unique experience, if maybe a decidedly intrepid one,
with accommodation sometimes being in isolated buddhist monasteries.
Although Kashmir is on the way back to peace, some parts of this the state are still off limits to travellers due to direct threat to their security.

Religious Sites |
The holiest temple of the Sikh faith, the Golden Temple, is a beautiful marble and golden domed gurudwara [sikh temple] surrounded by an artificial lake. Made in the late sixteenth century by the Guru Arjan Dev, the temple, in Amritsar city, Punjab, is open to all, subject to some basic rules, and Sikhs try to make at least one pilgrimage here in their lifetime. |
