Built between the 10th and 12th centuries by the Chandella dynasty in present day Madhya Pradesh, Khajuraho is a group of Hindu temples famous for their uninhibited, highly erotic sculptures and carvings depicting a variety of sexual acts.
Built from sandstone, the carvings are extremely ornate and precise, with an incredible level of detail, down to the jewellery worn by the sculpted figures.
There are several temples largely grouped into the Western, Eastern and Southern groups.
Excavations are ongoing and one of the larger temples, “Bija Math” was discovered as recently as 1998-99.
